Painter from the UK
Alain du Pontavice
born in 1962
Alain du Pontavice was born in 1962 and raised in Paris. He began drawing at the Independent French academy, ‘La Grande Chaumière’, and in the Montparnasse studios of artists such as René Tomasini, where he spent hours sketching.
In 1987 he graduated with an MA in Mandarin Chinese at the University of Paris 7, after which he lived for fifteen years in China, where he learned calligraphy and practiced Taiji and meditation. At that time, he also worked in textiles, passionate about techniques such as Ikat, Batik, and Shibori. In 2002 he established himself in South America, where he was captivated by the energy of the Andes and met artist Felix Lazo with whom he deepened his painting practice.
Abstract art came to him as a revelation in early 2000 as he explored automatic drawings and discovered the possibilities of relating his inner experiences in meditation with art. Paul Klee, Mark Rothko, Max Ernst, amongst other great painters, showed him the way somehow.
Alain shares his time between London and his studio in France. He regularly exhibits in the UK and France. His work is in private collections in the UK, the States, Japan, Spain, and France.
